Sept 10, 2009 I called Clinton Lake today and they said the trails are really muddy at this point. Since the humidity is supposed to be between 70% and 80% today and tomorrow with good chances of rain Friday going into Saturday (meaning little chance of drying out), I'm going to go ahead and postpone the trailride. :-( I rode the trails at Hillsdale last weekend and pulled two shoes, so I think it'd be best if we avoided the mud for a while for KSHSC. RESCHEDULE DATE: Saturday, October 10th at Hillsdale at 10am. I was pretty excited about riding at Clinton, but I'll be camping Saturday night after the trailride, and Clinton doesn't have stalls/pens for the horses, which I hadn't thought about when planning the first time! So its off to Hillsdale where they have horse accomodations! Everyone is welcome to join me in staying Saturday evening after the ride, bring your trailer or your tent. We'll be cooking over the campfire and staying in our trailers. A spot with water and a 20x20 pen (no electricity) is $8.50 per night, plus the $4 and change parking fee if you don't have a season pass. You can camp for just the $4 parking if you don't need a pen (tying to your trailer or bringing your own pen). They do have spots with electricity for more $, but there is only tie poles there, no pens for ponies. The pens/spots are first come first serve, but there shouldn't be a full house that weekend. It should be cool enough to not need AC/electricity, we survived last weekend and I'll have a generator if we reeeeeeally feel the need for power. :-D Bring friends to socialize and relax with the KSHSC crowd! Hope everyone has a great weekend, and THANK YOU for an AWESOME Benefit show! The points are being tabulated and the banquet planned, so look for updates and your invitations in the mail! ~Kristin Goin
August 19, 2009 Hello KSHSC!! Hope to see all of you at the Douglas County 4H KSHSC show on Saturday in Lawrence. Its double judged, so come rack up some points! Our season is quickly drawing to a close with only this Saturday's show and the 43rd Annual KSHSC Benefit Show the following weekend of the 29th and 30th. Remember, there's LOTS of fun to be had at the Benefit show! Its our largest show of the year and we'll be offering ALL the approved classes, PLUS the Jackpot Poles, Jackpot Flags, $500 Money Added Da$h 4 Ca$h Barrels, the Caitlin Morrison Memorial Barrels, and extra warm-up classes on Sunday. Don't forget to bring your items to donate to the Silent Auction, and your pocket book to put a bid in on all the cool stuff that's bound to turn up! This year we'll have all the classes except racing on Saturday, double judged. Then, we'll hold racing classes and Da$h for Ca$h on Sunday. For those of you who are interested in making a WEEKEND VACATION of it, electrical hookups and stalls are available at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday night, the 28th and 29th of the Benefit Show. The stall barn can be rented as a whole and I've got a sponsor willing to donate the $ to have it (ie- ME, Farm Bureau). That means stalls will be available at no fee, although you are responsible for stripping/thoroughly cleaning the stall at the end of your stay. You can come in any time after 5 on Friday. If you'd like an electrical hookup over by the stalls for a camper/trailer, its $10 per night and you need to let us know/pay on arrival. If you'd like to join me, I'm planning on heading over Friday afternoon/evening and working my horses in the arena and washing there. I just might have a bbq/luau Saturday evening, the more the merrier, byo goodies/munchies... Thank you so much for another wonderful season of KSHSC shows. I can't wait to see all of you this Saturday and the following weekend! Look for the 3rd edition of the KSHSC Red Shoe Review at the Benefit show. It will have important dates/times/places for the year's remaining activities. (Rule proposal meeting, trail ride, Awards Banquet) See you on the trail!
July 7, 2009 Hello KSHSC! 1- Lyndon Saddle Club July 4th show got postponed due to rain, the double judged show will be rescheduled for Saturday, August 8th, please plan on attending! 2- Douglas County Trailriders Show this Sunday, July 12th- I got this helpful update from Jenna Brumm, one of our Youth Directors: 3-Lucky Spur Saddle Club July 18th Show- Trail 18 and Over will now be Trail Open so that it can be a point class. They will still offer their non-point Trail 17 and Under class. Kids 17 and under are welcome to show in both, but the Trail Open class will be the point earning eligible class. 4- Sunflower State Games July 25th Show- Class 29 was posted as "Western Pleasure 19 and Over." Due to our rule change from a couple years ago, that wouldn't be a point class, so there will be a class 29A- Western Pleasure 19-39, and class 29B- Western Pleasure 40 and Over. This will open up the point earning eligibility! ALSO- I'm going to add this to the website, but if you'd like to get your entry booth stuff done ahead of time, use this link to pre-enter! Remember- it says there is a late fee if not registered early and that there is a 2 class minimum, but that WILL NOT APPLY. Its a stock thing for all the other online Sunflower Games events, and we'll just know it won't be enforced! I do think you get a T-shirt for entering early though....! (ps- I looked at it, and it looks like its missing age groups when you register, but it only offers the classes you're eligible for by the age you entered. ie- a 14 yr old will only be offered open, 14-18, and 18 and under classes and I was only offered open, 19-39, and 19 and over classes, so nothing is really missing!) 5- Shawnee County 4H Shows August 1st and 2nd- Age groups have been updated on Showmanship, Horsemanship, and pleasure,- please see the new showbill attached and on the website shortly. There is now 19-39 and 40 and over for Showmanship, Horsemanship, and W. Pleasure. Also, the "Stock Horse" pleasure has been changed to "Stock Type" to be point friendly. I'll let you know if anything else changes, hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll get the rest of the shows in as planned. I can't wait to see all of you on Sunday! Bring your sunny-vacation mentalities, no time like the present to shake off those worries and be happy with horses! ~Kristin Goin
October 16, 2008 Hello KSHSC!! We did it! The final show has finished up and we're ready to enjoy a winter of relaxation! Kinda... we still get to have our celebration! The 2008 KSHSC Fall Meeting and Awards Banquet will be held Sunday, December 7th at 3pm. It will be held at Circle S Ranch in Lawrence, KS. You can visit their website at www.circlesranch.com . Your invitations will be in the mail shortly, please return your RSVPs and corresponding dinner payments by mail to Lori Smith NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 10th!! Final points are posted on the website. If you find a discrepancy, please contact Katherine Shade no later than October 31st. Please take into consideration that these are the final points, and do not reflect those who did not show enough times to qualify for year end awards. The final placings by which the year end awards are given may vary slightly due to this fact. What a fantastic season! I can't wait to look back over the year and celebrate our triumphs at the Banquet. Please consider joining us this year, even if you are not going to be hauling home a truckload of awards. The venue is exciting and fun, the company couldn't get any better, and where else can you get a good meal and entertainment for $7?? (It's always entertaining when you get a bunch of horse people together!). Please consider joining myself in an official KSHSC office. KSHSC is only as productive as it's members, so come have a great time and volunteer for an office so your voice can be heard. See you in December! ~Kristin Goin
August 21, 2008 Hello everyone! There are a few changes happening with KSHSC that I'd like to make you aware of. For those of you who haven't heard yet, our Vice President Brad Drennan had a barn fire this last weekend while they were out of town. The cause was deemed a short in the electrical box. To make a terrible thing even worse, the Drennan's lost two show steers and their two show horses to the fire. Understandably, Brad has chosen to resign and remove their family from the pain of the horse world, they've just got too much going on right now. I've let the Drennan family know that the KSHSC is here for anything they need, and that our heartfelt sympathies go out to them at this difficult time. I'm sure they'd appreciate your thoughts and prayers as well. In light of the situation, I went to my rulebook to see what needed to be done about our Benefit show. As per the rules, Article VIII, if any officer should not be able to finish their term, the Executive committee shall elect a replacement from the general membership. We've done so, and your Vice President to fill the office until re-election at the 2008 Awards Banquet is now Kelly Casey! Congratulations and thanks are in order for her willingness to step in and finish up preparations for the Benefit show that is almost upon us! Kelly is responsible for 'managing' the Benefit show, and as such needed to appoint a new show director (previously Penny was listed). After a little convincing, Shawna Paulsen has been named the Benefit Show Director for this year. The updated show bill will be on the website shortly, along with the entry form. I've attached both to this email for your convenience. The Benefit show is our largest show of the year, and celebrates a successful show season with a bang! Nadine Hibdon has graciously put together the Annual Silent Auction. If you have any items you'd like to donate to be auctioned off, please bring them to the Benefit show. They can be horsey or not, it doesn't matter. All proceeds go directly to the KSHSC for year end awards, so whether you donate something or not, plan on bidding and buying one of the cool items that day! (And hopefully we'll have another of Arno's World Famous Pies to auction!!) We are still in need of class sponsors for the Benefit show as well. We've got a few in, but not many. I know lots of you are still interested, but didn't know where to send your sponsorships. If we could get these done as soon as possible, that would be great! Please send me an email if you plan on sending a check to Lori, I'm getting the sponsor list ready to go and would appreciate the heads up. Either way, the dollars go right to year end awards. PLEASE SEND YOUR SPONSORSHIPS TO LORI SMITH, OUR SECRETARY/TREASURER
at: We will also need LOTS of volunteers to help with gates and ring stewarding and other fun jobs! Every member needs to find a time to help out. If you are showing all day, you need to find someone (family member, friend, stranger, whoever) to fill a job for you for a while. If you still can't find a way to make it happen (not likely), please consider sponsoring a class. The whole show is run by volunteers, as usual, so come help us make it great! On an ending note, I'd like to sincerely thank the Executive committee and everyone else who's been of service this season. Any time one of our members is put in a terrible position in life, it effects our organization as well. Everyone has really stepped up and helped keep things rolling on this wonderful show season! Things are really falling into place, and with your help and enthusiasm, we can make this a Benefit show to remember! UPCOMING
EVENTS: REMEMBER: Sincerely, Kristin Goin
August 15, 2008 Hello all! We've only got a few more double judged horse shows in Lawrence left and then we will have survived a whole KSHSC show season! Hooray! That also means that its getting to be time for business... The 2008 Annual Rules Proposal meeting will be held at the Saddle Ridge Equestrian Area shelter at the Hillsdale State Park in Hillsdale, KS at 1pm on Sunday, September 7th. I will be arriving about 10am to do some trail riding preceding the meeting and I'd love some company! There will be NO food/drinks provided by KSHSC, however there is a large grill available for your use, or I plan on bringing a sack lunch/snacks (but you have to bring your own, I'm terrible at sharing... :-). Remember to pack some drinks and maybe lunch so you don't get famished! In addition to some fun times on the trail and some miles outside of the show pen for your horses, this outing is your chance to propose changes to our rule book. If you think something could be changed in a positive way, either by striking and/or adding words to an existing entry, or by adding a whole new entry, this is your chance to get it in. During the meeting, we will hear anyone's proposals, discuss/edit briefly to be sure they read the way they are intended by the proposer, and then record them to be voted upon by the general membership at the Awards Banquet later this year. Please read Article XI (included below in this email) to make sure that your proposals are done in an acceptable manner. Things to remember: a family can only propose 2 rule changes/additions and an individual membership can only propose 1. If you have more, you might want to recruit someone who shares your view to propose the ideas. ALSO- according to the rules, only those proposals presented in writing at the meeting with a representative present will be accepted. If you can't make it to the meeting, all you have to do is find a member who is willing to present/be responsible for your proposal who can be there in person. The way I read the rules, that still counts as your proposal, so if they (as an individual for example) have a proposal as well, they can present both, one on their behalf and one on yours. I would prefer if we didn't have to bicker over these rules, so if you can find someone who isn't using their allotted rule proposal, that would make things simpler (And I've already got my proposal ready, so don't call on me ;-) . Proposals via email will not be accepted, someone has to present them in writing at the meeting. If you can't find someone, check the back page of your rulebook, there is a list of members and their contact info, surely you can find someone who'd be willing to help. The trail riding before and after the meeting will be informal, but like I mentioned, I plan on being there around 10 and then heading out on the trails around 10:30. Hillsdale has several levels of trails, some of which are very wide, treeless, and mild. You can find harsher ones with hills, creeks, rocks, and other fun stuff if you feel up to it, but it is a park for most levels of rider. I've attached their brochure that includes the address, site map, and contact info for the park if you have questions. I can get you directions if you need them, just shoot me an email. THERE IS A PARKING FEE of $4.25 per vehicle whether you are hauling horses in to ride, or just coming for the meeting (they consider driving through the gate qualifying for the parking fee). If you aren't planning on bringing horses and just want to attend the meeting and are opposed to paying the $4.20 let me know and KSHSC can probably reimburse you for your parking pass. I want to make sure no one is detoured from presenting their ideas!! If it is raining, we will still have the meeting under the shelter, and then it's your call if you haul horses too! It may be a bit soggy, but it will save us the cost of renting a place. Hopefully it will be a beautiful fall day! If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to call or email me. THIS IS YOUR INVITATION! We won't be mailing anything. I will be personally calling those members who do not have email. The trail ride is open to anyone and everyone, so bring your friends to show them how fun our group is! The only thing you have to be a member to participate in is actually proposing a change. ~Kristin Goin ARTICLE XI
July 14, 2008 It looks like the 3rd times a charm!! The arena was ready and the Johnson County show in Gardner went really well, in addition to it being a gorgeous day out! Next up is the Lucky Spur Saddle Club show in Oskaloosa. They are really excited to host a show again and are offering camping the night before! I hope to see everyone up there on Saturday. I still need some helpers and I'd love to see everyone at the Dash For Cash as well, July 26th in Tongie too! Next, I know I've pushed it hard this year, but the attitude of the KSHSC shows seems to be improving!! I see a lot more smiling this year and am looking forward to every show! The majority of the 16 shows we've had so far have been absolutely fantastic, and I've heard only one other report of poor sportsmanship/attitude for the season thus far. That is VERY impressive taking into consideration how many places we've been, groups we've worked with, and people we've interacted with!! I do want to bring it to the memberships attention though, that we apparently aren't out of the 'bad-karma' woods just yet, and will need to continue our efforts to make the KSHSC a fun, learning, and competitive experience for all who participate. I received an email this morning reporting some snide comments made in the stands at the Gardner show about horses being schooled during classes and how those riders 'must think they're too good for circuit'. I'm here to say openly that while I wasn't the target of the snide comments (that I know of), that I too took part in the schooling and I certainly don't think I'm too good for our circuit!! My big red horse was a real punk in pleasure, and like quite a few competitors Saturday, I had to make sure he remembered his manners and that happened to be while I was still being judged. As a statement of my personal opinion, I do not have any issue with people who school during KSHSC classes, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do when you gotta do it. That being said, we must always be cognoscente of the rules, but while abiding them, everyone pays the same entry fee to participate and has the right to ride as they see fit. I do have a problem if a rider is disrupting other competitors with their schooling or is doing anything that could be considered 'cruel' or along those lines. From everything I saw yesterday, however, I was probably the most guilty of schooling before watching out for others, so I don't think that was an issue at all for the Johnson County Show. What I do think was an issue was the snide comments in the stands. I can't make everyone behave and I'm not going to yell at everyone to straighten up. I've learned over my 15 seasons showing KSHSC that negative attitudes only breed more negative attitudes and more rules rarely seem to solve anything to do with sportsmanship. So here's my continued challenge to ALL KSHSC MEMBERS: 1. Be the bigger horseman! Be the person who ends the negative chain. If you find yourself muttering something you wouldn't say to that persons face, STOP, THINK how they may feel, and say something POSITIVE instead! Call out anyone who's exhibiting poor sportsmanship at our shows, but do so in a positive way. Nice them to death if you have to, I'm counting on you to spread our good attitude! 2. Remember why we're at the KSHSC shows. Everyone has a different reason, but I can guarantee you that NO ONE is there to be ridiculed, put down, or otherwise belittled, nor to spend a fortune or win a million dollar trophy purse. (Except maybe my mom, my tab was the BIGGEST tab of the whole day, she wasn't as excited as I was...) You can't know why riders join us, or what things may be happening outside their horse show life, so don't judge and focus on what a great time you are having!!! We need to encourage everyone to enjoy our events, regardless of why they were drawn to our circuit. It doesn't matter if our shows are someone's practice pen, the biggest show they've ever been to, or if they are just there to witness that beautiful president I've heard so much about, we want everyone to feel welcome! 3. Keep having fun! Attitudes are contagious, good or bad, so keep KSHSC the happiest, friendliest show circuit there is! I want to close by saying THANK YOU! When I volunteered to take over the president's position, I knew it would be really challenging to change the perceived 'bad-karma' we've seemed to accumulate in the last few years. Honestly though, you have all stepped up and made the positive difference! I say it every email, but I'm so excited to go to every show and interact with the people that I probably see more than my husband! Lets keep this season reaching for new heights, I'll see you on the trail! ~ Kristin Goin KSHSC President
June 5, 2008 Again! We're going to give it another shot, the Johnson County 4H KSHSC show is rescheduled for Sunday, July 13th. The show bill will remain the same, it will still be double judged, and it will remain in Gardner. (3rd time's a charm, maybe it won't rain!!) We've got several shows coming up this weekend though and I'm sure you all are chomping at the bit since it's been 3 weeks now! We've got a show at the Topeka Expo center hosted by Shawnee County 4H Horse club. It will be held rain or shine since they've got the nice indoor and paved parking. So we'll get at least one show in no matter what the weather throws at us! On Sunday, we've got the Douglas County Trailriders double judged show just outside of Lawrence. Hopefully the weather holds out and we can get that double judged show in as well. Should the weather strike again (PLEASE sunshine, no rain!) and we have to cancel, the rain date is already tentatively set for Sunday, July 20th. Hopefully we won't have to use it! Keep those calendars marked for the KSHSC Youth Open Horse Show!! Not only is this one of the 2 sponsored KSHSC shows of the year, offering the youth a chance to earn money for scholarships, but it hosts the first round of the 4th Annual KSHSC Classic Performance Series!! Plan on attending and tell all your horse friends to join us! Again, the CPS has been restructured this year, offering more participants a shot at the prize $$! The entry fee looks big, but really you get a lot for your money. If you sign up for the whole series at the first show, it is $100 which includes 4 judges over 4 classes at 2 shows. That's 16 judgings... which breaks down to $6.25 per class. That's the cheapest jackpot I've ever been in! Another date to save is Saturday July 26th, the Da$h for Ca$h held at Leavenworth County Fair Grounds in Tonganoxie. The times are TBA, but it will be an afternoon/evening event. Even if you don't barrel race, tell your friends that do! It's held in conjunction with the NBHA and is a 4D event. Even if you're just getting started, come out an play! (My mom, Erika Tanney, even won a prize money check last year on REBEL, my pleasure palomino, so anything's possible!) Thanks for keeping KSHSC your calendars full of KSHSC. There is no excuses this weekend, we've got two shows, one indoor and one double judged and you've had the last 3 weeks to get all that 'other work' done around the house! ;-) See you at the shows!
January 2008 Hello all!! A little background is in order, so here’s my story… As a Varsity, Division I sport, we had to live up to the weight training, running, academic, and practice responsibilities that all collegiate athletes are expected to. I learned a whole new way to ride and with the help of my coaches, I earned an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship riding Horsemanship for K-State. The next summer, I put those same multitude of training hours to work and won (on my own time) the 2004 PHBA (Palomino) World Championship Nov. Am. Western Horsemanship and Hunt Seat Equitation titles on Rebel, the same flashy palomino I’d broken out some years before. Now, it would be great if that title changed Rebel’s outlook on life, but no luck. He always has and still does suffer from what we call EPS (Excessive Personality Syndrome) that compels him to exhibit excessively social behavior most people would consider “nosey” or “attention soliciting.” He is 10 this year and we are still showing with Circuit. During my stay at K-State I also served as the Equestrian Team Captain for two years. If you ask some of those who witnessed it, it can only be described with words like passionate, enthusiastic, and perhaps fanatical… I was the one who painted my face purple and white (and my dog’s for that matter) to support my team on show day. I lead them in cheers, chants, and other energy building activities at the shows in an environment usually reserved, quiet, and less than “enthusiastic.” Some people turned up their noses, some people cheered with us, but no one will forget us! That is the type of enthusiasm I hope to bring back to KSHSC. I have FUN at horse shows! I think everyone else should as well! Yes, we are all competitive, but there is nothing in the rule book that says we have to be so with a vengeance. We can focus, compete, win, and still laugh and have a good time with our fellow class entrants when the judge’s card heads to the announcers stand. My motto: Believe me, if I can convince a Varsity collegiate Head Coach that I NEED to take my purple painted dog on the team bus all the way to the Nationals in Tennessee to keep up morale, we should have no problem pumping some fun into our weekends together! I look enthusiastically forward to our season ahead. This year, let’s put the sportsmanship back in our Circuit. Let’s put the fun back in our weekends. And most of all lets enjoy the time we have with our horses, friends, family, and all those people we have the potential of impacting in a positive way! See you on the trail! Kristin Goin
November 5, 2007 To All KSHSC Members, The year 2007 is coming to an end and that means it is time for our annual “Business Meeting and Awards Banquet.” This year the meeting and banquet will be held at the Spring Hill Community Center, located at 613 South Race, Springhill, KS 66083, on December 2nd. This is the same facility where we held the Spring Kickoff Potluck. Take 169 Hwy to 215th St and go east. Cross Webster and turn right on Race St which dead-ends at the Spring Hill Community Center. The Business meeting will begin promptly at 12 noon followed by the Awards Banquet which will begin at the conclusion of the business meeting or about 2:00 pm. KSHSC will pay for half of the meal for members making the cost to members $5, and $10 for guests. This is a great deal, and the food is wonderful. The same caterer we had last year will be catering for us again this year. The menu includes Brisket, Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Alfredo, Twice Baked Mashed Potatoes, Corn, Green Beans, Assorted Pies, Rolls and Drinks. Seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so complete the reservation form at the end of this newsletter and return it, prepaid, ASAP, but no later than November 24. The Business Meeting is VERY IMPORTANT. The purpose of the business meeting is to elect new officers for the coming year, and to vote on proposed rule changes. Without officers and rules there will be no Circuit. I was very disappointed in the low number of people who showed up for the rules proposal meeting. There is an old saying that goes something like this, “if you complain”. don’t vote, don’t So, if you didn’t come to the rules proposal meeting, don’t complain about the rules. If you want them changed come to the next meeting, NEXT YEAR. There will be several offices up for election this year. The two-year positions include: President, Secretary/Treasurer, Youth Director-two, Awards Committee, and Member at Large. All rules committee position are up, and they are one-year commitments, as well as rule book committee and chair. We must fill positions at this meeting. Please, please think about a position and become involved. The Circuit doesn’t run by itself and without people to take over these positions, it won’t continue to be solvent. Following is a quote from JFK from January 20, 1961, and is a part of his inaugural address that will live in infamy -- “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.” You might wonder why I would include this and think what relevance is it to Circuit. Well, think about it, change Americans to Circuit Members. I know that there are people who come to almost all of the shows, members in good standing, but they don’t volunteer, and they don’t help out. They come and show, which is what they want to do. That’s not so bad, I guess. But, what happens when the people who always volunteer get tired and say “no more”. There won’t be any Circuit, there won’t be any Year End Awards without YOU stepping forward and taking responsibility. The business meeting can be long and boring, so I urge you to come prepared to volunteer for an office. I don’t want to hear “DECLINE”. I really think the KSHSC is a great organization, but it has problems, like any organization. One person cannot fix them, it takes the organization as a whole to jump in and say “how can I make this better, what can I do to resolve this issue”. I would like to personally thank all of those who volunteered and held offices during my presidency. I know it is not easy, and that you do have real lives beyond circuit. I know how much time it took, time that you could have spent doing things for yourself or your family. Thank You In closing, “Any fool can criticize, condemn, & complain and most fools do.” Benjamin Franklin Nancy Richardson
