 |
Read 2007 Show Directors Meeting minutes as a reminder, most things still apply. |
 |
2 Approved class changes: English Equitation 18 and under- NOW English Equitation 13 and under AND English Equitation 14-18. Western Pleasure 19 and over- NOW Western Pleasure 19-39. |
 |
Show dates were discussed and finalized. Miami County cannot have a show this year due to scheduling conflicts with their fair board. Lucky Spur Saddle Club (Oskaloosa) will be hosting a show this year. |
 |
Show directors were finalized with updated phone and address information. |
 |
Entry forms- This year we will be posting an entry form along with the show bill for each show on the website. You can use one you generate, we don’t mind, but you must email it to either Kristin Goin or Lori Smith. Until we receive an entry form for your show, we will have our stock entry form posted on the website under your show. You can go either way, your own or ours, it makes no difference, but one will be posted. |
 |
Deadlines-Show directors are to have both personal club membership paid, plus show bill with judge’s name to Lori Smith or Kristin Goin by March 1. If any of the above is missing, your show bill will not be included in the packet given to members at the Spring Pot Luck. |
 |
Notes-If an exhibitor wants credit (points) for showing in Registered Quarter Horse Halter or Registered Quarter Horse Western Pleasure, they must attach copies of the horse’s registration papers to their application. If not, then Kathrine Shade will not give them credit for showing in that class. |
 |
Consider asking judge to send you the patterns prior to show so you can make copies and sell them for, say, $1 at registration. You still need to post them so no one is required to buy them. If you do this, it is very important that no one other than you have access to them prior to the show so they can practice the patterns. |
 |
It was stressed repeatedly that all judges, ring stewards, and show staff should have read the rule book and be familiar with KSHSC rules to avoid disagreements. |
 |
THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT- Shared by Kristin Goin, emphasizing positive attitudes this show season. Also printed on the back of the meeting agenda. |
“The MOST IMPORTANT POINT
KSHSC Mission Statement:
To make horse showing available to all breeds and all levels of youth and adult riders.
To promote the education of the people of Kansas in the breeding, care, use, handling and development of horses and horsemanship.
To encourage good sportsmanship and proper conduct among horsemen and horsewomen and to foster good fellowship among all persons interested in horses.
To encourage proper and humane handling and care of horses; and to prevent cruelty to animals.
First sentence, Check.
Last sentence, Check.
The in-between is where our focus lies this year. For too long I’ve been the only one acting silly at shows.
During my stay at K-State I served as the Varsity Equestrian Team Captain for two years. If you ask some of those who witnessed it, it can only be described with words like passionate, enthusiastic, and perhaps fanatical… I was the one who painted my face purple and white (and my dog’s for that matter) to support my team on show day.
I lead them in cheers, chants, and other energy building activities at the shows in an environment usually reserved, quiet, and less than “enthusiastic.” Some people turned up their noses, some people cheered with us, but no one will forget us!
That is the type of enthusiasm I hope to bring back to KSHSC. I have FUN at horse shows! I think everyone else should as well! Yes, we are all competitive, but there is nothing in the rule book that says we have to be so with a vengeance. We can focus, compete, win, and still laugh and have a good time with our fellow class entrants when the judge’s card heads to the announcers stand. My motto:
I’m the ONE FOR FUN, and there should be FUN FOR ALL!!
Believe me, if I can convince a Varsity collegiate Head Coach that I NEED to take my purple painted dog on the team bus all the way to the Nationals in Tennessee to keep up morale, we should have no problem pumping some fun into our weekends together!
I look enthusiastically forward to our season ahead. This year, let’s put the sportsmanship back in our Circuit. Let’s put the fun back in our weekends. And most of all lets enjoy the time we have with our horses, friends, family, and all those people we have the potential of impacting in a positive way! See you on the trail!”

President Nancy Richardson called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm
and roll was taken by Joyce Morrison.
Discussed the approved classes for 2007.
The year, the entry fees can be up to $5 for adult/open classes and up to $4 for youth classes.
Other associations, such as APHA, Arabian and KS Kounts give credit for their members who show in KSHSC shows.
Be aware that at the end of a show, those members may approach you or your show secretary for a signature on
the form they submit to those organizations.
Joyce Morrison requested that when possible, email your show bill to her as an attachment.
(kshscmorrison@yahoo.com). And if you also want your entry form on the website, do the same.
While the entry forms are not interactive (i.e., cannot be filled out then printed off), exhibitors can print them
off prior to the show and bring them to registration already completed. While it would be
nice to have the entry form by March 1, that can sent to Joyce later. The sooner she has it, the sooner it can
go on the website.
Show directors are to have both personal club membership paid, plus show bill with judge’s name to Joyce
Morrison by March 1. If any of the above is missing, your show bill will not be included in the packet given to
members at the Spring Pot Luck.
If an exhibitor wants credit (points) for showing in Registered
Quarter Horse Halter or Registered Quarter Horse Western Pleasure, they must attach copies of the horse’s registration
papers to their application. If not, then Kathrine Mestagh will not give them credit for showing in that class.
Be courteous to all constituents: be kind to your neighbors. Remind all workers, especially registration, gate
keepers, ring stewards, announcers, etc., that you’re hosting this show to raise money, and that the money is coming
from the exhibitors and their families. Besides, it’s the right thing to do. (credit: Wilford Brimley)
Consider asking judge to send you the patterns prior to show so you can make copies and sell them for, say, $1
at registration. You still need to post them so no one is required to buy them. If you do this, it is very
important that no one other than you have access to them prior to the show so they can practice the patterns –
that would be the wrong thing to do.
On registration form, request notification of any tack changes -- put note to announcer on class sheets so
he can announce tack change and exhibitor can be excused as soon as results are handed to ring steward.
We will have Classic Performance Series and Dash for Cash as a totally separate entity this year: separate
entry forms, bank account, everything.
Show dates were discussed and a tentative schedule will be posted on the website with a final schedule in the
member’s packet at the Spring Kick-Off Potluck.
Brad Drennan discussed the rules proposals as they impact the 2007 show season:
1. Copies of AQHA papers are to be included with membership application if member
wants points in Registered Quarter Horse Halter or Western Pleasure.
2. Maximum entry fee for Adult/Open class is now $5; Youth $4.
3. Revised class: Tandem Bareback Pleasure is now walk-trot only – no loping.
4. Revised class: Walk-Trot Western Pleasure – any horse ridden in this class is not allowed to enter other
classes which require loping or
cantering. This is on a per-show basis.
5. New class: Pleasure Pairs Walk-Trot – May show in either Western or English attire and equipment;
walk-trot both ways and asked to back; open to all breeds; points are awarded to the horse (not rider);
judged on suitability of attire, performance and manner; all riders and horses are elgible for all other
walk, trot and loping classes.
6. Revised class: Walk-Trot Horsemanship, 6-9 years - Judge must choose from two patterns listed in
rule book, and still must post pattern at show.
7. New class: Walk-Trot Pleasure, 6-9 years – Safety for younger kids

President Nancy Richardson called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm and roll
was taken by Joyce Morrison.
1. Nancy Richardson discussed she will be including information in her 2007 newsletters re: KSHSC jobs that
will be up for election at this year’s fall Business Meeting. She
covered what her job as President entails
(general and active management of KSHSC) and, as an example, discussed if any decisions are made that could have
an adverse effect on the KSHSC treasury, then she must be involved in that decision.
2. The buckskin group that shows at the Lawrence fairgrounds has approached KSHSC about usage of our mailing list
to contact our members as to when their organization has a
show that does not conflict with a KSHSC show date. While the Board decided it would not be in the best interest of
our organization to give out our member’s contact info, other options were suggested including: allow other organization
to leave flyers at our shows; include info on other organizations as a link on our website; charge $30 per show for 3
announcements re: the other organizations; charge $150 for an ad on our home page that would remain up all year.
Joyce Morrison is to contact the buckskin group with our decision.
The decision was made to publish a directory in about June as that is when we have the majority of our memberships
in, but it is for the personal use of our members ONLY – not for any businesses of our members or organizations to use.
Our email list has apparently been used this past year by a KSHSC member to advertise other shows and while it doesn’t
seem to bother most of us, we have received complaints.
3. The KSHSC youth group is interested in having their own tab on our website. They could include youth-specific
information, pictures, and monthly financial statements. Need to be careful with what info is included – probably no
last names or contact info for the kids. Joyce Morrison to handle setting up tab with webmaster – info to be included
on website needs to go thru Joyce Morrison or
Raelynn Moon. Eric Jones was a tremendous help in getting our website up
and running, but he has returned to school and has bowed out, and
Raelynn has volunteered to help. The website has been a great addition to communication.
4. Joyce Morrison reported that the current balance in KSHSC account is $3.404.29.
5. Follow the rules at our shows, but apply them in a courteous manner with the expectation that both members
and guests will adhere to KSHSC’s rules. It is not appropriate for ANYONE to yell out that there is a problem – this
type of behavior reflects poorly on our circuit. We understand people get frustrated but we need to pursue alternatives
other than being rude.
6. Discussion was held re: location of spring kick-off potluck and fall business meeting
year-end awards. In the past, DG CO has called the organization who has had a facility reserved the previous year
prior to booking it for the next year with another group. When we called in December 2006 to book for 2007, DG CO
had already given our date to another organization. Nancy Richardson was able to reserve the Spring Hill Community
Center for a lesser cost ($100 vs approximately $180 – approx. because DG CO charges on an hourly basis) and it is
more centrally located for our circuit.
7. A contact info sheet was circulated to the board members obtain addresses and phone number for publication on
our website and in the rulebook.

President Nancy Richardson called the meeting to order at 6:20 pm and roll was taken by Al Morrison.
Discussion was held as to what direction the directors want to see KSHSC go. Items suggested:
1. Bigger, larger shows
2. Follow the rules but apply them in a courteous manner with the expectation that both
members and guests will adhere to KSHSC’s rules. Examples of infractions were schooling
that continues once a class is called to line up; or a non-paint horse entering a paint class. If a rule is broken, the first recourse is the show director, second is the rules committee for
that show, and third is a formal protest with a $25 check to the KSHSC rules committee.
Ways of
avoiding the problems include an announcement prior to affected classes that no
schooling
allowed after class is called to line up; notice printed on the show bill that horse registration
papers may/will be required at show registration. Avoidance is always the best policy.
If the show director is approached re: a question as to whether or not an exhibitor is
following the rules,
and the show director is uncertain as to the KSHSC rules, he/she should review the appropriate section in the rule book and, if he/she wishes, confer with the
members of his show’s rules committee. The show director should then courteously approach the exhibitor and point out the rule. If the problem cannot be resolved at that point, then the person with the original complaint may choose to submit a $25 check and written question within 24 hours to
KSHSC.
It is not appropriate for ANYONE to yell out that there is a problem – that type of behavior
reflects poorly on our circuit. We understand that people get frustrated but we need to pursue alternatives other
than being rude.
3. Consider including business cards in membership packets that state we have about 20 shows per season and
include the website address. We would ask members to drop them off at theirfeed store, vet, etc. A possible cost
of $22/1000 cards was stated. Erika Tanney and Joyce Morrison to work on.
4. Include a question on the application for the member to note how they heard of KSHSC so we can track how people find us. Use check-boxes for ease of obtaining the information.
5. Research the costs of a window sticker, maybe 4” x 5” or 3” x 6” that shows our logo, website address, and
“member” on it. Depending on cost, include one per membership with additional
ones available for sale at cost. Erika Tanney and Joyce Morrison to work on.
6. Discussion was held on selecting a new website provider. The current webmaster has not
been as responsive as we would like. Eric Jones had researched a number of options which
Debbie Murry presented. We have two parts: one is the host/domain rental and the other is
the information presented on the actual website. The host/domain fee was paid in January
for 12 months @ $99. (If we stay with that provider, next year’s rental would be $99 plus an
additional $20 for renewal). In addition, the current webmaster charges $200 per year for updates. Two years ago,
our website apparently was built as a college project for the current
webmaster and it seems that at least part of the lack of responsiveness has been due to
his graduation plus he has no knowledge of horse shows. Total annual cost of current website = $299.
The proposed webmaster will charge $300 to set-up and maintain our website with a more
professional appearance
and user-friendly applications. She can have much of it up by
March 1, with refinements as we send them to her. After this year, our host cost would be $35 for
one year and
then $0 after that. After this year, the webmaster’s cost would be $150
per year. So while the expense would be greater this year, over time the cost would be less
than what we’re paying now with a more professional look plus better response time. The webmaster has a number
of horse show circuits for whom she has developed websites and maintains those websites. Eric checked references and received positive feedback.
Joyce Morrison reported that the current KSHSC balance is right at $4,000.
The board voted unanimously to pursue the new website. Eric Jones and Joyce Morrison will work with the new
webmaster to supply the needed information.
7. Discussion on advertising was held. Eric Jones presented sample ads plus costs for advertising in Checkerboard Corral, Horsepower and Horse Tails and Sales. Because of the complexity of the subject, a committee was formed for further discussion. Members
are: Nancy Richardson, Eric Jones, Debbie Murry and Eva Prince.
8. We discussed changing the logo and the board voted to leave it as is.
9. Nancy Richardson has already contracted with L & M catering of Baldwin to cater our awards banquet this fall. She asked the board members to vote on food items and she will use that to set the menu.

2-21-06 Show Directors Meeting
DG CO Fairgrounds
Lawrence, KS
|
|
President Nancy Richardson called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
An attendance sheet was circulated and the following were present:
Carrol and Bob McCartney, Rocking V Ranch
David and Connie Wright, Lyndon Saddle Club
Marty and Lucas Fager, Lyndon Saddle Club
Glenda Mohr, Franklin County 4-H Horse Club
Kim Vann, Shawnee County 4-H
Lisa Belson, Shawnee County 4-H Horse Club
Betty Miles, Shawnee County 4-H Horse Club
Raelynn Moon, DCTR/ DG CO 4-H Horse Project
Teresa Mathews, DCTR/ DG CO 4-H Horse Project
Kevin Harrity, WY CO 4-H
Pat Chance, WY-BON Saddle Club
Leslie Owen, Miami County 4-H
Sandi Bal, Miami County Fairboard
Al Morrison, JO CO 4-H Horse Club; KSHSC Benefit
George and Ann Johnson, Youth/Old Timers
Kathrine Mestagh, LV CO 4-H Horse Group
Nancy discussed the need for judges who can judge all breeds of horses, not just stock-type. KSHSC is
an open circuit, and show directors need to be certain that their judges are familiar with all breeds, especially
Arabian and other saddle-type breeds.
KSHSC is registered with both APHA (paint) and AHA (Arabian) associations so that participating members can receive
national credits from our shows. The participants have paperwork that must be verified and signed at shows by the show
director or show secretary. Please let your registration people know this request may occur and send the participants
to the show director or show secretary for needed signatures.
We will include membership information in your director’s packet and ask you to place it at your registration table at
each show.
Rules, rules, rules….Even though directors may not agree with a particular KSHSC rule, they need to courteously
enforce them. When rules are selectively enforced, it can be upsetting to those who do follow them. Show directors are
responsible for knowing KSHSC’s rules. It is certainly acceptable to refer to the rule book at the show for details,
but you should thoroughly review the rules prior to the show. We supply each show with 5 rule books. Show Directors are
responsible for getting a copy of the current KSHSC Rule Book to the judge(s) in time for the judge(s) to read and know the
rules prior to your show. In addition, gate personnel, ring stewards and registration need to review the rules prior to the
show as they each have specific responsibilities. While we realize the rule book is not perfect, it is what the membership
of KSHSC has developed for everyone’s use.
If a KSHSC board member is at a show and becomes aware of a rule infraction, it is their responsibility to
contact the show director and respectfully inform him/her of the rule that is not being enforced. In turn, it is the
show director’s responsibility to respond courteously to the board member and immediately correct the situation.
Follow the rules and apply them in a polite manner with the expectation that both members and guests will adhere to
KSHSC’s rules. Examples of infractions were schooling that continues once a class is called to line up; or a non-paint
horse entering a paint class. If a rule is broken, the first recourse is the show director, second is the rules committee
for that show, and third is a formal protest with a $25 check to the KSHSC rules committee. Ways of avoiding the problems
include an announcement prior to affected classes that no schooling allowed after classed is called to line up;
notice printed on the show bill that horse registration papers may/will be required at show registration.
If a problem occurs each year at a certain show with a specific exhibitor, it may be necessary for the show director to
privately approach the exhibitor in a courteous manner as soon as he registers, prior to his entering the class, point out
the rule, and politely request his compliance. Avoidance of potential problems is always the best policy. We appreciate
your help in this matter.
Shows at the Douglas County Fairgrounds are to abide by a contract the fairgrounds has with the vending machine.
Specifically, we are not to unplug the vending machine, post an “Out of Order” sign, or in any other manner
keep people from using the vending machine. However, there is nothing in the contract that says the concession
stand cannot post a sign beside the vending machine that shows the concession stand’s menu or asks people to support
the concession stand.
We must have the judge’s names on show bills before we can send them out. Again, this is something that is in the rule
book but is not always followed. We certainly want to include your show bill in the initial packet so please help us
help you by having the complete show bill to Joyce Morrison by March 1.
Julie Voge at K-State publishes a list of judges each year around this time which is helpful in locating judges. As a
circuit, we are also attempting to develop a list of good judges, and will be working on it during this year. If you
have any names to contribute to this list, please send to Joyce Morrison.
Al Morrison discussed the 2006 rule changes as they affect shows:
1. No electronic “shockers” allowed
2. Any shows that are called due to inclement weather need to:
a. Contact KSHSC president, Nancy Richardson, and/or KSHSC secretary
Joyce Morrison within 5 days from original show date if they want to reschedule.
b. The show needs to be rescheduled “at the earliest date possible”
c. For shows originally scheduled in July or August that are cancelled due to inclement weather,
the show director needs to re-schedule if at all possible prior to the Benefit Show on Labor Day Weekend.
If it is absolutely not possible, the successive weekends following the Benefit Show may be used for inclement
weather make-up only
d. We may now have more than one double-judged show per weekend
Al pointed out there is an error on the “2006 KSHSC Approved Classes” which was previously mailed to the show directors
in that “Quarter-Type Western Pleasure, Open” should read “Stock-Type Western Pleasure, Open”
Discussion was held on the barrel pattern: is a rider required to go from barrel to barrel in a straight line. The
consensus was a rider may deviate however he/she wants, including making 360 degree turns in between barrels,
as long as they don’t go around the barrel more than once, or go on the wrong side of the barrel, or circle
the barrels in the wrong order, or cross the timer line.
However, in flags, a rider can go around the barrel as many times as they want – as long as they go around the barrel
at least once.
In addition, racers are required to wear shirts with sleeves – “cap” sleeves are acceptable.
